What we handle
Actually Read handles the books and information you choose to use in the app, including EPUB and PDF files, reading position, focus sessions, manual records for physical books, journal entries, settings, and questions you ask the reading companion.
Book content and AI
Book embedding and retrieval happen on your device. Full book content is never sent to the cloud.
On supported Apple devices, you can choose an on-device answer option powered by Apple's Foundation Models. If you choose cloud-powered AI, your question and the limited relevant context needed to answer it may be processed by a cloud AI provider. The app does not send the complete book file or full book content to that provider.
How we use information
We use information handled by the app to provide the reading experience you request: displaying your books, saving your place, running focus sessions, tracking manual reading records and journal entries, and generating grounded AI responses.
Sharing
We do not sell your book content or personal information. Information is shared with a cloud AI provider only when you choose a cloud-powered AI response, and only to provide that response. Providers that process information for us are required to protect it consistently with this policy.
Retention and deletion
Book content, reading progress, focus records, and journal entries stored on your device remain there until you delete them in the app or remove the app. We do not retain full book content on our servers. Cloud-powered AI requests may be processed temporarily by the selected provider to generate a response, subject to that provider's applicable retention practices.
You can delete books and associated reading data from the app. To request help with data deletion or ask about data we may hold, email support@actuallyread.com.
Your choices
You control whether to use an on-device or cloud-powered AI option when available. You can choose which apps, app categories, and websites Deep Focus blocks, and you can enable Avoid Spoilers for strict spoiler control in the reading companion.
Children's privacy
Actually Read is not directed to children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, contact us and we will address the request.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when our practices change. We will post the updated version here and revise the date above.
